Centura History

Julian Selling originally founded Centura as Central Supply Company in 1933, opening the first location in a garage on Hopewell Avenue in Toronto (Dufferin and Eglinton area).

The company began as a building supply wholesaler, selling blocks, clement, brick, arborite and select ceramic products within the construction industry.

In 1947, Donald Cowie joined Mr. Selling in the business, with Alex Cowie joining a year later. The three began a partnership with the aim of building Central Supply Company into a reputable distribution company and decided to increase their product offering to include more ceramic tile goods.

Mr. Selling retired from the business in 1959, leaving Don and Alex to expand the company and their reach. In the ’60s, Central Supply Company added three new locations in Montreal, Quebec City and Ottawa.

Upon this success, it was time to extend the company’s reach throughout the province of Ontario. Don formed a strategic alliance with Angelo and Lou Castellani of Hamilton, Ont., and Doug DelNet of London, Ont.

In the late ’60s, Alex retired, and Don moved ahead with his expansion plans.

Looking to the major Canadian city centres, the early ’80s saw Central Supply Company open their doors in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

In the mid-’80s, Central Supply Company formed yet another strategic partnership with Gino and Peter Maddalena in the Maritimes, adding three more locations in Halifax, Moncton and St. John’s.

It was in he late ’80s that a new marketing strategy prompted the name of the company to be formally changed from Central Supply Company to Centura. The Centura name has become synonymous with quality and service, with many products branded and sold under its strong reputation.
