Carpets are a comfy, luxurious way to better enjoy a room. A good carpet is stylish, supportive and soft. With so many colours, materials, designs, and shapes to choose from, it can be hard to pick out the right kind of carpet for your home. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can better narrow down the candidates.
A carpet's under padding is like a building's foundation. It provides support, strength, and even cushioning. Padding helps protect the carpet and prevent the carpet's backing or fibers from falling apart with age. Your carpet's padding should match the area you intend to use it in. High-traffic areas like a living room will warrant a firm, dense padding but less-frequently visited areas (like a guest bedroom) can support something thinner. Padding is purchased separately from your carpet, which means you can select the style and thickness that works best for your room.
Carpets are available in several different styles like plush, Berber, and textured. The best selection for you will likely depend on your lifestyle and preferences. Plush carpeting, for instance, is soft, thick, and comfortable underfoot. It also, however, shows imprints and tracks and can even develop “pooling”—a form of shaded area where the carpet fibers have fallen in the opposite direction. As a result, plush carpets are better for lower traffic areas.
Berber carpeting is flatter and more densely packed in comparison. It proves to be highly durable and won't show tracks or stains as easily, making it perfect for high-traffic areas or a child's playroom.
Similarly, textured carpeting is also good at hiding tracks and dirt. This is because textured carpets have fibers cut to different heights, which partially reflects light and makes it harder to see dirt.
Frieze carpets are a sort of compromise between plush, Berber, and textured pieces. The fibers of a frieze carpet are slightly twisted, resulting in a fancier look than most textured or Berber carpets but one that isn't as high-end as plush.
Since the benefits of some carpet styles overlap each other, you should identify the styles that are the most appropriate for the location you want before narrowing down further.
Carpets need to be maintained. How often and how easily will depend on your choice. Shag carpets or similar high-end plush rugs are hard to clean, for instance, and may cause a number of hassles if you have pets or children who might track in dirt or leave strains. Make sure to inquire about the specific cleaning and maintenance needs of a particular carpet type before buying. If you don't like the maintenance requirements but still love the style, try asking about different materials that may help.
