Selecting Natural Stone

The natural stone products Centura carries include Slates and Marbles. Stones come in different finishes: polished; honed; or, textured. There is a range of varied sizes available.

What is Natural Stone?
Natural Stone is basically cut from the earth's rocks. It is a natural product that will always vary with shades, veining etc. depending on which part of the quarry the manufacturer is cutting from.

|
Polished Marble
Polished Marble should not be used in areas where acid will affect it such as kitchens and around bathroom toilets. These acids will etch the polish. Black and green marbles require special setting materials due to their tendency to curl and change colour. Please discuss this with our order desk or your flooring contractor prior to installation. Keep in mind that Polished Marble can be slippery when wet.

Tumbled Marble
Tumbled Marble has a beautiful rustic or old world look to it. It isn't a polished marble and may therefore be used in your kitchen or bathroom.Please keep in mind that a Penetrating Sealer is recommended. It makes the grouting and cleaning easier. The stain resistance will also increase when sealers are used.

Slate
Slate is also available in various sizes and typically, the larger the size, the thicker the product. Slate is found in many parts of the world and the characteristics of each are very different. Some are known for their variation in thickness even though they are the same all round size. These require a Medium Bed Mortar for a successful installation. Others may have a more consistent thickness allowing for a thinset installation.

|
No-sheen, penetrating sealer formulated to darken, enrich and highlight the character and beauty of unsealed, low-porosity natural stone. It rejuvenates the color and improves the appearance of worn and weathered dense stone. May also be used as a pre-grouting sealer over clean stone surfaces a minimum of 2 hours prior to grouting. Allows moisture-vapor transmission. It also effectively darkens the color of grout joints.
